AMD vs Nvidia: AI Divergence in Strategy and Valuation

2026/07/19 16:10Browse 0

Nvidia (NVDA) has dramatically outperformed Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) over the past few years, driven by its dominance in the AI accelerator market. While both companies have benefited from the AI boom, their business strategies and financial profiles have diverged significantly. Nvidia now derives 92% of its revenue from data center AI chips, whereas AMD maintains a more diversified portfolio, with data center contributing only 56% of sales.

Nvidia's AI-First Pivot

Four years ago, Nvidia was a more diversified company with gaming, professional visualization, and automotive segments. Today, its data center segment alone accounts for 92% of revenue, and the company no longer breaks out gaming separately. This laser focus on AI accelerators has paid off: revenue surged 85% in the latest fiscal first quarter and 65% in fiscal 2026. Despite this growth, Nvidia's stock trades at just 31 times earnings, a valuation that some analysts consider cheap given its trajectory.

AMD's Diversification Strategy

Under CEO Lisa Su, AMD has maintained distinct business segments. In the first quarter of 2026, its data center business made up 56% of revenue, while client and gaming contributed 35%, and embedded chips (from the Xilinx acquisition) accounted for 9%. AMD's embedded segment focuses on edge computing and physical AI, and the company also emphasizes CPUs, which are critical for data center build-outs. This diversity helped AMD achieve 38% annual revenue growth in Q1 and 34% in 2025, though its price-to-earnings ratio of 161 may deter value-focused investors.

Which Stock Is the Better Bet?

Nvidia's first-mover advantage in AI accelerators, faster growth, and lower valuation make it appear the stronger buy. AMD's diversified approach—spanning CPUs, GPUs, and embedded chips—positions it well for the AI market but may not close the competitive gap. While AMD's strategy is arguably prudent, Nvidia's dominance in the core AI chip market gives it a clear edge in both performance and valuation.
