A senior Amazon Web Services executive is leaving the company after nearly 19 years, marking a notable change in the cloud unit's leadership. Dave Brown, an AWS senior vice president, will depart at the end of this month for a role outside Amazon, according to an internal note from AWS CEO Matt Garman. Brown's responsibilities included overseeing compute and machine learning services, such as Bedrock and SageMaker, and he was a member of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy's influential S-team.
A long tenure at AWS
Brown joined AWS in its early days and was part of the team that built the core EC2 service in South Africa in the 2000s. EC2, one of AWS's oldest offerings, provides virtual servers for rent by the second, powering countless applications and websites. Over the years, Brown's role expanded to include key AI and machine learning initiatives, positioning him at the center of AWS's growth.
Leadership transition
Dave Treadwell, a top executive from Amazon's e-commerce division, will replace Brown. In a separate memo, Brown expressed confidence in his successor, calling Treadwell "an exceptional leader with deep technical expertise." Brown's departure comes as AWS continues to benefit from strong AI demand, posting 28% revenue growth in the first quarter, alongside rivals Microsoft and Google.
