The London Stock Exchange (LSE) plans to launch an overnight trading platform in the first half of 2027, aiming to attract global retail investors accustomed to 24/7 access on crypto exchanges. The standalone market will initially focus on exchange-traded products, according to a Financial Times report.
Overnight trading to rival crypto markets
The new venue will operate outside the LSE's normal hours, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. with a brief nightly pause. This move responds to changing investor expectations shaped by digital asset markets, where round-the-clock trading is standard. Exchange executives said the platform aims to capitalize on London's global position while offering greater flexibility for international retail investors to trade London-listed products.
The LSE already entered the crypto ETP space in mid-2024, launching physically backed Bitcoin and Ethereum ETNs. Initially restricted to professional investors, these products became available to retail buyers after rule changes by the Financial Conduct Authority.
AI integration and industry trend
Alongside extended hours, the LSE plans to integrate agentic AI functionality into the venue, allowing AI systems to support portfolio evaluation, market analysis, and trade execution. The launch follows similar moves by major US exchanges like Nasdaq, NYSE, CME, and Cboe, as traditional financial markets adapt to around-the-clock investing driven by crypto competition.
