DTCC tests tokenized markets with Wall Street heavyweights

2026/07/15 22:49Browse 0

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) on Wednesday will complete a set of financial transactions using tokenized versions of assets held at its subsidiary, The Depository Trust Company. The day-long event involves more than 25 firms from traditional finance and digital assets, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Vanguard and the New York Stock Exchange. JPMorgan kicked off the day by converting the Invesco QQQ Trust into a tokenized asset.

Tokenization trial aims to bridge old and new

Nadine Chakar, global head of DTCC Digital Assets, said in a video statement that the event marks the beginning of a long journey to demonstrate that legacy and new technologies can coexist. She added that the trial will prove the value of tokenization and help build a foundation for a scalable launch in October. Tokenization typically refers to issuing digital representations of securities or real-world assets on a blockchain, with touted benefits including lower costs, faster settlement, greater transparency and programmability.

The DTCC is the central post-trade organization in the U.S. financial system, processing, settling and safeguarding most stock and bond transactions. Its subsidiaries handled $4.7 quadrillion in securities transactions last year. The financial industry has debated tokenization for years without widespread adoption, while crypto-native specialists like Ondo and Securitize have emerged with high-profile partnerships.

Bridging TradFi and DeFi

Brian Steele, DTCC's president of clearing and securities services, said the DTCC Tokenization service offers the opportunity for increased efficiency, deeper liquidity and new ways to move and use assets. Wednesday's demonstration is meant to show how tokenized assets can operate across collateral, repo, equities, margin and asset transfers using existing financial infrastructure. Assets expected to be tokenized include shares of Microsoft, Circle Internet Group, Invesco QQQ Trust, State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF, and Treasurys of various maturities.
