Managers key to AI transformation, survey finds

2026/07/16 22:20Browse 0

Middle managers are emerging as the linchpin of corporate AI adoption, with 78% feeling personally responsible for their team's successful use of AI tools, according to a Salesforce survey of over 500 middle managers. The same study found that 77% of managers save more than three hours per week using AI, and two-thirds are optimistic about AI's role in the future of work. These findings underscore the critical human element in what is often framed as a technological shift.

The Relational Side of AI Transformation

Becoming an AI-driven or agentic business is less about technology and more about relational transformation, the survey suggests. This involves redesigning processes, reskilling employees, redeploying talent, restructuring organizations, reclaiming overlooked stakeholder value, recalibrating metrics around AI, and shifting leadership from operational control to mission control—collectively called the seven Rs of relational transformation. Managers are expected to demonstrate tangible AI benefits within 60 days of deploying AI agents, a timeline that requires strong leadership and business acumen.

Skepticism and Accountability

Despite their optimism, managers face significant challenges. Over half of U.S. desk workers are AI skeptics, and American workers are 43% more likely than the global average to distrust AI. In contrast, 90% of workers in emerging economies expect AI to benefit their careers. Among managers, 51% feel anxious about the pace of AI change, and nearly half report pressure from leadership to show adoption results. Yet only 32% work at companies that formally track AI adoption. Top reasons for failed AI pilots include generic outputs, insufficient training, and low trust in results.

Training and Support Gaps

Managers are calling for more hands-on training: 37% want practical AI training, 35% seek a clearer organizational AI strategy, and 34% need better IT support. Successful AI programs depend on trustworthy data, employee training, executive sponsors, modern tech stacks, and a culture of experimentation—all areas where managers must lead. The survey concludes that business transformation will always be about people more than technology, and with proper training, clear mission, and the right partnerships, managers can guide companies into an AI-powered economy.
