Microsoft patches Age of Empires II bug

2026/07/16 02:47Browse 0

Historic Patch Tuesday

Microsoft on Tuesday fixed a record number of security vulnerabilities across its product lineup, a milestone partly attributed to the use of artificial intelligence by both the company and external researchers to identify flaws. Among the patched issues was a critical bug in the remastered version of the classic 25-year-old war strategy game Age of Empires II.

Game Invite Exploit

The vulnerability allowed attackers to take over a victim's computer by sending a specially crafted malicious game invite, according to security researchers. A video posted on X demonstrated how the exploit could be carried out. Cybersecurity firm Rapid7 reported that a successful attack would enable hackers to place malicious files on the target machine, ultimately granting them the ability to execute arbitrary code and seize control of the system.

No Evidence of Exploitation

There is no evidence that the bug was exploited in the wild. However, targeting gamers remains an effective vector for malware distribution, as it can lead to password theft and other compromises on a large number of computers.
