The open-source video editor OpenCut is undergoing a complete rewrite, transitioning from its classic version to a new architecture built on a Rust core. The project aims to offer a powerful alternative to CapCut, with features like an Editor API, first-class third-party plugin support, and cross-platform deployment from a single codebase. The new version will also include an MCP server for AI agents, headless mode for automation and batch rendering, and a scripting tab directly in the editor.
New Architecture and Features
The rewrite introduces a plugin-first architecture that enables third-party plugins to integrate seamlessly. Developers will also have access to an Editor API, allowing for custom extensions. The headless mode supports automation and batch rendering, while the scripting tab provides in-editor scripting capabilities. The MCP server is designed for AI agents, potentially enabling AI-assisted video editing workflows.
Development and Availability
Currently, the classic version remains available at opencut.app and on GitHub under opencut-app/opencut-classic. The rewritten version will be hosted at new.opencut.app until it is ready to replace the classic version. Developers can run the new version locally using the proto tool for dependency management, with commands for web, API, and desktop development. The project is not yet accepting outside contributions as the architecture is still being finalized, but users can follow progress via Discord or GitHub issues.
Sponsorship and Support
OpenCut is supported by companies that believe in open-source creator tools, including fal.ai, which provides generative image, video, and audio models. Other sponsors can reach out via sponsor@opencut.app to have their logos featured.
