Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in 1993's *Jurassic Park* and its 2022 sequel *Jurassic World Dominion*, died Monday in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 78. His death was described by family as sudden and unexpected; he had been cancer-free after treatment for stage 3 blood cancer but had a compromised immune system and had recently suffered from pneumonia.

A versatile career across film and television

While American audiences primarily know Neill for his role in *Jurassic Park*, his career spanned decades and genres. He played the grown Damien in *Omen III: The Final Conflict*, a Russian officer in *The Hunt for Red October*, and made cameo appearances as Odin in *Thor: Ragnarok* and *Thor: Love and Thunder*. He also starred in critically acclaimed independent films such as 1993's Oscar-winning *The Piano*.

On television, Neill earned his first Golden Globe nomination for the lead role in *Reilly, Ace of Spies* in the 1980s. He was nominated for an Emmy and a second Golden Globe for playing Merlin in the 1998 miniseries *Merlin*. He played Cardinal Wolsey in *The Tudors* and was part of the ensemble cast in the 2015 adaptation of Agatha Christie's *And Then There Were None*. He was also magnetic as the ruthless CI Major Chester Campbell in *Peaky Blinders*.

Personal life and cancer battle

Neill owned the Two Paddocks winery in New Zealand and often named his livestock after friends in the film industry, including Helena Bonham Carter and Taika Waititi. While doing publicity for *Jurassic World Dominion* in 2022, he noticed swollen glands and was diagnosed with stage 3 blood cancer. He took time off for chemotherapy, and when that stopped working, he underwent CAR T-cell therapy. By the time of his death, he was cancer-free, but his immune system was weakened from treatments.

Tributes from colleagues

An outpouring of tributes came from industry colleagues. *Peaky Blinders* star Cillian Murphy called Neill "one of the kindest, funniest, and gentlest people." Director Steven Spielberg said, "I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family." Laura Dern told *Variety*, "He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man." Taika Waititi posted on Instagram, "You are so loved and will be sorely missed." Locals in the New Zealand township of Clyde, which Neill regularly visited, remembered him as an extremely down-to-earth guy who "fitted into the community."

Seven of his best film performances

In Neill's honor, here are seven of his best film performances, in chronological order. *My Brilliant Career* (1979) was his first major role, establishing him as a rising romantic lead. *The Piano* (1993) showcased him as a more villainous character, Alisdair Stewart, in a haunting masterpiece. *Jurassic Park* (1993) remains his most iconic role. Other notable performances include *Omen III: The Final Conflict* (1981), *The Hunt for Red October* (1990), *Event Horizon* (1997), and *Jurassic World Dominion* (2022).
