Japanese tech giant Rakuten Wallet has announced the creation of the first physical Shiba Inu (SHIB) coin, a metal souvenir with a unique tactile finish. The coin is the fifth release in the firm's collectible 'Real Coin' series and has already achieved 100% approval from employees during internal testing. Rakuten's retail ecosystem reaches 44 million users, making this a significant marketing move.
A Metal Souvenir with Japanese Precision
The physical SHIB coin is not connected to the blockchain but stands out for its craftsmanship. Unlike previous releases in the series featuring Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, the Shiba Inu coin uses sandblasting technology, known as a blast finish, to create a premium matte texture. This tactile property, described as a 'tactile hit,' sets it apart from earlier editions. Rakuten plans to use the coin in live presentations and offline events, as well as in large-scale merchandise giveaway campaigns.
Japan's Crypto Regulatory Overhaul
The launch comes as Japan's parliament passes a package of historic amendments that bring crypto assets under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. The new rules include a ban on insider trading, with criminal penalties for speculation based on leaked information. Asset issuers must now disclose information similarly to traditional public companies. Unregistered exchanges face massive fines and prison sentences. The law also lays the groundwork for spot crypto ETFs, though their launch will require additional regulatory approvals.
Raketen's Strategic Push into Crypto
For Rakuten, SHIB has moved beyond its origins as an internet joke. In the spring, the exchange added SHIB support, integrating it into the company's ecosystem. Millions of Japanese users can now convert Rakuten Points into SHIB and spend them through Rakuten Pay at 5 million retail locations across the country. As competition intensifies amid market legalization and potential ETF launches, Rakuten's physical coin and giveaway campaigns aim to capture retail customers before major investment funds enter the market.
