Solana Music readies launch to challenge Spotify

2026/07/11 15:36Browse 0

A new Solana-based platform called Solana Music is gearing up for launch, aiming to disrupt Spotify's dominance in music distribution and monetization. The project plans to use the Solana blockchain to let artists distribute and earn from their work directly, bypassing traditional intermediaries. However, it enters a space littered with failed blockchain streaming attempts, most notably the cautionary tale of Nina Protocol.

The Nina Protocol cautionary tale

Launched in 2021 on Solana, Nina Protocol was built on similar principles: artist-first distribution, zero commission on sales, and full revenue retention for creators. Co-founded by Jack Callahan, Mike Pollard, and Eric Farber, all from DIY music backgrounds, the platform earned the nickname “Bandcamp for the Discord generation.” Nina evolved meaningfully over time, adding fiat and USDC payment support in late 2023 and a mobile app in 2024. By late 2025, it had attracted roughly 40,000 monthly users and hosted over 20,000 music releases. Yet on May 28, 2026, the team announced a phased shutdown beginning in mid-July 2026. Despite meaningful growth, the project couldn’t overcome the fundamental challenges of building a sustainable business at the intersection of blockchain and consumer music.

What Solana Music needs to get right

The sustainability question is the one that ultimately sank Nina. Platforms that take zero commission need alternative revenue models. Nina notably never launched a dedicated token, which may have limited both its fundraising options and its ability to bootstrap network effects through token incentives. Solana Music will need to address this if it hopes to avoid a similar fate. The platform must also navigate the broader challenges of user adoption and competing with established services like Spotify, which already dominate the streaming market.
