Toy Story 5 opens to $312M, battles tablet villain

Disney and Pixar's 'Toy Story 5' has stormed the global box office with an estimated $312 million in its opening weekend, making it the biggest launch of 2026 so far. The film earned $160 million domestically and $152 million internationally, surpassing the $131 million domestic debut of Universal's 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' and the $120 million opening of 'Toy Story 4' in 2019. It now holds the second-highest animated opening weekend of all time, behind only 'Incredibles 2.'

A familiar cast faces a new foe

Directed by Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris, the fifth installment reunites the original voice cast, including Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, and Annie Potts also return. This time, the toys confront a different kind of antagonist: a tablet device named Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee. According to Disney's synopsis, Lilypad arrives with 'disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie,' challenging the traditional playtime the toys represent. Keanu Reeves, Bad Bunny, and Conan O'Brien join the cast as new characters.

Technology as the central conflict

The choice to make technology the villain reflects real-world concerns about children's screen time. A 2024 survey by Common Sense Media found that 40% of children own their own tablet by age 2, and more than half do by age 4. The report noted that tablets have the highest ownership rate among children compared to any other mobile device. Between 75% and 80% of parents expressed worries about excessive use, mental health effects, and inappropriate content. Business Insider's Conz Preti, after watching the film, wrote that she wants her kids to 'lean into imagination, creating worlds together, instead of being zombiefied in front of an app.'

Since the original 'Toy Story' debuted in 1995, the franchise has earned over $1.3 billion at the box office, plus revenue from video games, toys, merchandise, books, apparel, and in-real-life experiences. The new film's focus on digital distraction is likely to strike a chord with parents navigating the iPad era.
