Institutional crypto inflow hinges on regulation and tokenomics

Institutional capital moving on-chain despite market downturn

The convergence of traditional finance and cryptocurrency is accelerating, even amid a prolonged market slump. According to Franklin Crypto's Janis Ginns, the gap between token prices and fundamental value is widening, prompting institutional investors to see this as a buying opportunity.

Franklin Templeton acquired the liquid investment division of CoinFund, rebranded as "250 Digital," to build a fundamentals-driven crypto investment platform. While venture capital remains active, Ginns noted that liquid investment strategies are gaining appeal in the current environment.

Infrastructure shifts and tokenized assets

Ginns identified infrastructure changes as a key driver for institutional inflows. Robinhood's blockchain strategy exemplifies how traditional distribution rails are moving onto crypto rails. Interest in tokenized money market funds (MMFs) is also rising, as they allow investors to earn yield while staying on-chain.

Tokenized equities, stablecoin proliferation, and blockchain-based financial infrastructure are further blurring the lines between traditional finance and crypto.

Regulation and tokenomics as catalysts

Ginns pointed to regulatory clarity as a major catalyst for the next market upswing. The U.S. Senate's vote on the CLARITY Act could reduce uncertainty for institutional investors by setting clear rules for digital assets.

Improving tokenomics is equally important. Projects that link token value to actual revenue, such as Hyperliquid's buyback model, are gaining traction. DeFi protocols like Uniswap and Aave, and oracle networks like Chainlink, could regain investor attention if they revamp their token models. Stellar was also highlighted as a promising blockchain infrastructure for institutional adoption.

The current gap between price and fundamentals may be a phase of structural preparation. If regulatory clarity and value-attribution mechanisms improve, the crypto market could enter a new institutional-led phase.
