The U.S. Mint will begin producing a $1 gold coin featuring President Trump's portrait, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Wednesday on X. The coin commemorates America's 250th birthday and is meant to "honor the enduring legacy of liberty and be a lasting symbol of patriotism," Bessent wrote. Production is already underway, and the coin will be available this fall, a Treasury spokesperson told CBS News.
Design and Composition
The coin displays a simple portrait of Trump on one side and the presidential seal insignia on the other. Despite being called a "gold coin," it is made of non-precious metals with a gold-like finish, according to the Treasury Department. The $1 denomination marks it as legal tender, though its collector value may exceed face value.
Part of Broader Currency Efforts
This is the latest push to put Trump's likeness on official U.S. currency. For the America 250 celebration, Trump's signature already appears on $100 bills now in circulation. The administration has also proposed a $250 bill featuring Trump, but that effort faces constitutional hurdles and remains uncertain.
