Wheat surges on Black Sea escalation

2026/07/16 07:13Browse 0

Wheat futures surged to limit gains at midday on Wednesday, with Chicago SRW contracts jumping 35 to 36 cents and Kansas City HRW hitting the 45-cent limit, as escalating conflict in the Black Sea region raised fresh concerns about export disruptions.

The rally was driven by heightened tensions after Russia struck several port locations in Odesa, Ukraine overnight, retaliating against Ukrainian attacks on Russian tankers in the Sea of Azov. Additionally, Russian exports through the Kerch Strait remain limited following restrictions reported last week. These developments have stoked fears of further supply constraints from the key Black Sea grain corridor.

Market Moves

Chicago Board of Trade September wheat settled at $6.80 1/4 per bushel, up 35 1/4 cents, while December rose 35 cents to $6.94 3/4. Kansas City September wheat climbed 43 cents to $7.21, and December added 41 1/2 cents to $7.34. Minneapolis spring wheat also advanced, with September up 26 1/4 cents at $6.84 1/4 and December gaining 27 3/4 cents to $7.06.

Demand and Supply

Amid the geopolitical turmoil, demand for U.S. wheat remained solid. Taiwan importers purchased a total of 98,150 metric tons of wheat from the United States overnight, underscoring continued buying interest from Asian buyers. The combination of supply-side risks and steady export demand provided additional support to prices.

Traders will be watching for further developments in the Black Sea region, as any escalation could trigger additional limit moves. The wheat complex continues to lead the grains higher, with corn and soybeans also posting gains on weather concerns and Chinese demand.
