A new scam on the XRP Ledger has cost one holder approximately 14,646 XRP, worth around $16,800, after they fell for a fraudulent verification message. The scam, detected by a blockchain investigator, involved a fake reward offer that tricked the user into sending funds to a flagged wallet.
How the Scam Worked
The victim received a message that appeared to be a legitimate payment request, complete with a memo reading "Safe XRPL verify message." This memo gave the impression that the transaction was part of a genuine verification process for a reward. However, the destination wallet had already been flagged as fraudulent on XRP Ledger explorers.
The attacker baited the victim with a promise of a 10% monthly reward, urging quick action to claim it. This psychological tactic established a false sense of trust, preventing the victim from verifying the authenticity of the message. By the time the transaction was confirmed, the funds were irretrievable.
The XRP community has been warned to remain vigilant against such schemes, which exploit urgency and trust to bypass basic security measures.
