- pYuTerOct 01, 2024 · 2 years agoYes, there are exemptions and exceptions to the cost basis transfer rules for cryptocurrencies. One exemption is when the transfer of cryptocurrencies is considered a gift. In this case, the cost basis is not transferred and the recipient will have a new cost basis equal to the fair market value of the cryptocurrencies at the time of the gift. Another exception is when cryptocurrencies are inherited. Inherited cryptocurrencies receive a step-up in cost basis to the fair market value at the time of the original owner's death. These exemptions and exceptions provide flexibility in determining the cost basis for cryptocurrencies in certain situations.
- Mahesh ThakorNov 04, 2024 · a year agoAbsolutely! The cost basis transfer rules for cryptocurrencies do not apply when the transfer is made between your own wallets or accounts. For example, if you transfer Bitcoin from your Coinbase wallet to your Binance wallet, the cost basis remains the same. However, it's important to note that if you sell or trade the cryptocurrencies after the transfer, the cost basis will be calculated based on the original acquisition cost.
