- Sneha PanthiMay 23, 2024 · 2 years agoThe currency system in Germany went through significant changes before the introduction of the euro. In the early 20th century, Germany used the gold mark as its official currency. However, after World War I, hyperinflation hit the country, leading to the introduction of the Rentenmark in 1923. The Rentenmark was later replaced by the Reichsmark in 1924, which remained in circulation until the end of World War II. After the war, Germany was divided into two separate countries, East Germany and West Germany, each with its own currency. West Germany adopted the Deutsche Mark in 1948, while East Germany introduced the East German mark. The two currencies coexisted until the reunification of Germany in 1990, when the Deutsche Mark became the official currency of the unified country. The Deutsche Mark continued to be used until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro.
