- Reid WaltonAug 31, 2024 · a year agoProof of stake is a consensus algorithm used in cryptocurrencies to achieve distributed consensus. Unlike proof of work, which relies on miners solving complex mathematical problems to validate transactions and create new blocks, proof of stake selects validators based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold. Validators are chosen to create new blocks and validate transactions based on their stake in the network. This means that the more cryptocurrency a validator holds, the more likely they are to be chosen to validate transactions. Proof of stake is considered to be more energy-efficient compared to proof of work, as it doesn't require extensive computational power. It also incentivizes validators to hold onto their cryptocurrency, as their stake in the network determines their chances of being chosen to validate transactions.
- Tamara LutheJun 05, 2021 · 4 years agoProof of stake is a consensus mechanism used in cryptocurrencies to secure the network and validate transactions. It works by selecting validators based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold. Validators are chosen to create new blocks and validate transactions based on their stake in the network. This means that the more cryptocurrency a validator holds, the more power they have in the network. Proof of stake is seen as an alternative to proof of work, which relies on miners solving complex mathematical problems. While proof of work requires significant computational power, proof of stake is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. It also encourages validators to hold onto their cryptocurrency, as their stake in the network determines their chances of being selected to validate transactions.

It differs from proof of work in that it selects validators based on the amount of cryptocurrency they hold, rather than their computational power. Validators are chosen to create new blocks and validate transactions based on their stake in the network. This means that the more cryptocurrency a validator holds, the more likely they are to be chosen to validate transactions. Proof of stake is considered to be a more energy-efficient and scalable alternative to proof of work. It also incentivizes validators to hold onto their cryptocurrency, as their stake in the network determines their chances of being selected to validate transactions.
