The Bitcoin whitepaper, published in 2008, outlined the concept of a decentralized digital currency and laid the foundation for the development of Bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto's vision was to create a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that would eliminate the need for intermediaries like banks and governments. The first block of the Bitcoin blockchain, known as the Genesis Block, was mined by Nakamoto in January 2009, marking the beginning of the Bitcoin network.
